Privacy Policy
Last updated: November 18, 2025
At Shorthand, we are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring the security of your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data in our app at https://shorthand.ink, which connects with Notion to sync your handwritten notes and perform on-device transcriptions.
1. Information Collection and Use
Shorthand does not collect, store, or process any of your personal information on our servers. All your data, including handwritten notes and transcriptions, is stored locally on your device. Handwriting transcriptions are generated entirely on-device using client-side processing, ensuring that raw handwriting data never leaves your device.
We do not share any data with third parties other than Notion (when sync is enabled, subject to Notion's privacy policy) without your explicit consent.
2. Data Storage and Sync
Local Storage
All your Shorthand data, including handwritten notes and on-device transcriptions, is primarily stored locally on your device. This means that your information remains under your control at all times.
Notion Sync
To provide seamless synchronization of your notes and transcriptions, Shorthand uses Notion's integration service. When you enable Notion sync:
Your Shorthand data (notes and transcriptions) is securely synced to your personal Notion workspace.
The sync process is managed entirely by Notion's API and services.
We do not have access to your Notion account credentials or the data stored within it beyond what is necessary for the sync functionality.
Please note that the use of Notion sync is subject to Notion's own terms of service and privacy policy. We encourage you to review Notion's privacy practices for more information on how they handle your data.
3. Data Security
We take reasonable measures to help protect your data within the Shorthand app:
All data is stored locally on your device, protected by your device's built-in security features.
When using Notion sync, your data is protected by Notion's encryption standards during transmission and storage.
On-device transcriptions use secure, local processing to prevent any external exposure of handwriting data.
We recommend using strong device passcodes and enabling biometric authentication (like Face ID or Touch ID) for additional security.
4. Third-Party Services
Shorthand does not share your data with any third-party services other than Notion for optional synchronization, which is under your control. No data is shared without your consent, and all sharing is limited to the necessary notes and transcriptions for sync purposes.
5. Activity Data
To improve the app's functionality and user experience, we may collect anonymized activity data, such as usage patterns or error reports. This data does not include any personally identifiable information (PII) and is not linked to individual users. Such data may be shared internally with the developer for analysis and development purposes.
6. Children's Privacy
Shorthand is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect or maintain information from children under 13.
7. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on our website and updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy.
8. Your Choices and Rights
As all your data is stored locally or in your personal Notion workspace, you have full control over your information. You can view, edit, or delete your data at any time within the app or your Notion account. You can disable Notion sync at any time to prevent further sharing.
